This project has emerged from the "Social Networks" workshop at the
"Plug'n'Politix Connect Congress" at Egocity, Zurich, October 2001.
Our aim is to make a list of alternative open access internet spaces which can
exhibit artworks and creative stuff made by users in the different spaces across
the world. We can exchange images by email or photocopies etc. sent in the post,
exhibit them, and immediately we will begin to build a DIY street-level
international art scene for almost nothing! We can talk about exactly how to
organise this, but the first step is to get information.
It will give a chance for all the users of different spaces to see what others
are doing, it may start them e-mailing and talking with each other, it will
make each space full of new sights, and it should be a lot of fun! ;-) Ideally
we'd like each exhibition to generate a web page, so people who send their
artworks can then see them on the web, and say, "Hey, I made that!"
Please understand that this network will be about VISIBILITY, OPENNESS and
CREATIVITY, not about secrecy, paranoia or propaganda. While those second
things may be part of what you are concerned with, they probably are only
appropriate to inject into artworks that can be seen by the public!
And, of course, in the interests of openness, if you know of anyone else who is
involved with an alternative open networked space who wasn't at the Connect
Congress who may want to take part in Artwork<=>Network then please draw
this information to their attention as well.
===> THE QUESTIONS (Help is in brackets)
To help coordinate this please will you provide the following information?
1: YOU
(1.0) What's your name?
(We want to establish ONE person to be the contact at each location. If you
have a collective decision-making process then please do agree with yourselves
who the contact person is and have some meetings to decide what to do. We would
like to have just one person as the contact.)
(1.1) What email address should we use for information about
Artwork<=>Network?
(Unless something unusual is going on, this will be your email address!)
(1.2) Where are you located?
(City, Nation)
2: THE SPACE
(2.0) Do You have a space available where you can show artworks?
(All of the artworks we are talking about will be flat - so you can put them on
the wall. That way we can email them and you can print them out, or we can post
photocopies etc.)
(2.1) If you do have a space, can the public access it, or is it a private
space?
(Some unofficial spaces aren't appropriate to publicise. That's okay - but
please tell us the status of your space.)
(2.2) What is the "official" name of the organisation that will be hosting
this Artwork<=>Network node?
(If there isn't one, you'd better invent one!)
(2.3) If your space is openly accessible, what is the address?
(This way we can mail you stuff and tell people where to visit.)
3: THE NETWORK
(3.0) Do you and other people in your space want to show artworks that we send
you?
(We expect the answer will be "yes" - but of course, it's possible that you
don't have the time, energy or inclination to make stuff - in which case, say
"no".)
(3.1) Do you and other people in your space want to create artworks that get
sent to other spaces?
(If you have a space that's able to show stuff, we hope you'll answer "yes" -
but if your space can't be a show space, you can still participate by sending
works to other spaces.)
====> END OF THE QUESTIONS
THE NEXT STEP
If you've answered "yes" to question 3.2 please will you email me a few (4-6)
images of the INTERIOR of your space, so that other people who are making
artworks can see what sort of things may be appropriate that will look good and
be the right size. I will make these into a web page and then I will contact you
by email again soon. Please don't delay replying to get the pictures, I would
rather have information NOW and pictures later.
Cheers,
James
